This subpart prescribes the requirements for the issuance of private pilot certificates and ratings, the conditions under which those certificates and ratings are necessary, and the general operating rules for persons who hold those certificates and ratings.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has published the Private Pilot —Airplane Airman Certification Standards (ACS) document to communicate the aeronautical knowledge, flight proficiency, and risk management standards for private pilot certification in the airplane category, single- engine land and sea; and multiengine land and sea classes.
A student pilot who is receiving training for cross-country flight in a single-engine airplane must receive and log flight training in the following maneuvers and procedures: ( 1 ) Use of aeronautical charts for VFR navigation using pilotage and dead reckoning with the aid of a magnetic compass;
3 hours of night flight training in a single engine airplane, that includes at least: a) 1 cross country flight of over 100 nm total distance; and. b) 10 T/O’s and 10 landings to a full stop with each involving a flight in the traffic pattern at an airport.
