The scale of the map permits the user to convert distance on the map to distance on the ground or vice versa. The ability to determine distance on a map, as well as on the earth’s surface, is an important factor in planning and executing military missions.
Common scales for Canadian military maps are: 1 :63,360 or one inch per mile; 1 :31,680 or two inches per mile; 1 :25,000 or approximately 21/:! inches per mile. Maps of smaller scale than these, that is, maps showing more miles per inch, are sometimes useful for long dis tance operations, but cannot show much detail.
Soldiers must know how to determine locations of points on a map, measure distances and azimuths, and identify symbols on a map. They must also be able to determine the elevation and relief of areas on standard military maps.
US Military Maps and many Canadian and European maps use a scale of 1:25,000. Example: One centimeter on the map equals 250 meters on the terrain. Logically, then, four centimeters on the map equal 1,000 meters (one kilometer) on the terrain.
