Measure Distance on a Military Map. A graphic scale is a ruler printed on the map and is used to convert distances on the map to actual ground distances. The graphic scale is divided into two parts. To the right of the zero, the scale is marked in full units of measure and is called the primary scale.
Cadets can use a map to measure the distance between two points (eg, points A and B as illustrated at Figure 18-4-1) on the ground. All maps are drawn to scale; therefore, a specified distance on a map equals a specified distance on the ground.
1. Identify the scale of the map. The map scale is the ratio (1:50,000) of the distance on the map (1 inch) compared to the distance on the ground. (usually 50,000 inches). 2. Convert a straight-line map. distance to miles, meters, or yards.

Common scales for Canadian military maps are: 1 :63,360 or one inch per mile; 1 :31,680 or two inches per mile; 1 :25,000 or approximately 21/:! inches per mile. Maps of smaller scale than these, that is, maps showing more miles per inch, are sometimes useful for long dis tance operations, but cannot show much detail.
