This mod adds a tape measure which you can use to measure the distance between positions. After obtaining the Tape Measure you can start measuring by right-clicking on a block once. Then moving to the second position and right-clicking the block on that position.

Mod for Minecraft 1.7.3 (and 1.6.6) that changes the way render distance is calculated, so that it is many times greater than the original. I've now added a "lite" version as well that is essentially double view distance instead of "4x". Original render distance (blocks):
