Map scale is ALWAYS shown on a map. Shown below is a British M726, 1:50,000 scale map with the ratio and scale lines shown. Estimating and measuring distance. As maps show a grid and have scale lines, it is possible to estimate or measure distances for use on the ground or on a map.
• There are several techniques to measure distance on a map. – STRAIGHT LINE DISTANCE –measuring from point A to point B on a map (horizontal distance). – CURVATURE DISTANCE –measuring a trail or other curved line on a map (horizontal distance). – SLOPE DISTANCE –measuring the planned route terrain slope on a map (vertical distance).
To convert the map distance to ground distance, move the paper down to the graphic bar scale, and align the right tick mark (b) with a printed number in the primary scale so that the left tick mark (a) is in the extension scale.
Open the ‘Options’ menu. Scroll to the ‘Map Settings’ and activate the ‘Measure Tools’ check box. The ‘Measure Tools’ for distance and area are displayed in the bottom left corner of the main window. Measure Distance. The distance measurement displays the distance between two points.
