Amtrak has a very user friendly website to book trains on just enter start and end station and press book then do the rest. When I was last on Amtrak I got a roomette it’s great if you’re traveling alone but tight for two.
I would suggest starting out in Chicago for your Amtrak adventure and choosing between The California Zephyr to Emeryville San Francisco, The Southwest Chief to Los Angeles or the Empire Builder to Seattle.

You could fly into Boston, with an advanced separately purchased coach ticket, take Amtrak’s “Northeast Regional” train directly to Washington (about 7-8 hour ride; sit on left side for best views).
