I don't mind paying a little more for the ease of having a local expert customize the plans and be reachable if something were to go awry.

They will often come into their own when putting an itinerary that cannot be booked direct with an airline into a single ticket. In this case, there is a way to DIY the flights in a single ticket via Qantas, so harder for agent to compete.

It’s often suggested here that platforms like booking.com are good for research but that you should always book directly with the accommodation. I’ve been using Booking.com for more than a decade, probably clocking up 40-50 nights a year.
