The best practice is to have the person redeeming the miles out of their account make the reservation. There are a limited number of airline loyalty programs that limit who you can redeem your miles for.

I don’t use cents per mile just compare the miles to the cash price; obviously that would give you cents per mile but I don’t think of it that way.
