A travel forum on public radio told me to puchase my fare 5 1/2 months in advance (that would be about Nov. 1). I have been watching fares for over a month. They have held steady from my airport to Athens at about $1300 +.
Low cost carriers may have low base fares, but make a dummy booking with one to discover the full cost of a journey before booking automatically with the airline. Factor in, as mentioned above, the potential cost of travelling to or from an airport at a distance from your destination city.

Answer 1 of 7: I hate checking airfares every day, very eager to purchase tickets for my trip to Europe in August. I have to take my bicycle (racing) so the airline matters. Need to fly into London or Istanbul and then take a continental flight between them.
