1. Rounding natural numbers up (over‑approximation) and down (under‑approximation). 2. Identifying the difference between approximation and rounding of a natural number. 3. Communicating in English, developing basic mathematical, computer and scientific competences, developing learning skills.
If the digit in the “ones” place is between 5 and 9, round up to the nearest ten. Let the students know that the rules stand regardless of the size of the number involved. Next, come up with a few numbers to model rounding to the nearest ten. Download to read more.
Follow up by choosing a number and asking students to name some multiples of 10 that are close to it. Can they name the one that is closest? What should we do if a number is half way between two multiples of 10? I.e. what if we get 45? Explain that we round these numbers up to the next multiple of 10. Repeat for hundreds & thousands.
