There is a Hessian fly free date. In southeast MO that date is highly dependent on weather. The average date is October 15th. With wheat there is no yield advantage to planting early, but there can be a yield penalty.

Fly-free dates are specifically tailored to the environmental conditions of different regions across the country.
If a variety is susceptible to the Hessian fly, delay planting until after the fly-free date. The fly-free date ranges from Sept. 28 at the Iowa line to Oct. 17 at the Arkansas line (Figure 1). The best wheat yields often result from plantings made just after the fly-free date.

Soybean and corn harvests were delayed well past the Hessian Fly free date. This meant that wheat planting was prevented or wheat was planted after the optimum planting date. The Missouri Agricultural Statistics Service estimated that planted wheat acreage in Missouri was less than 450,000 acres.
