It was established in 1785 under the State of Franklin, from Washington and Wilkes Counties, but was abolished in 1788 and included in Washington County. That area was moved to Carter County in 1796, and part of it was later moved to Johnson County in 1836.

Bell County never existed. Note that Memphis is located to the west. The other map shows James County in southeast Tennessee.
