If you are eligible for upgrade and would like to check in through mobile app, you can simply use the chat feature. In my experience, this feature is much more efficient than going to / waiting at the front desk. The advantage of checking in through the app is the ability to forego the desk.

I tend to arrive/land prior to check-in time. Checking in on the app in advance; I can see if they’ve already got my room assigned; which reduces anxiety about arriving a few hours (or more) before 4:00p.
Technically, an Elite benefit is doing mobile check-in and skipping the desk, but many (majority) of hotels have been burned by fraud or other issues and so will err on the side of caution and have you stop by the desk to confirm your identification, etc.
How do I use Online Check-In on the Marriott Website? Within 48-hrs prior to arrival, all Reservations at participating Hotels will receive an automated email which will include the Web Check-In link.
