What is an air mile? An “air mile” is a nautical measurement of distance which does not account for roads, terrain or other variables. Basically, an air mile is the shortest path between two points, or “as the crow flies.” You can easily plot a rough 100 air mile radius from your reporting location using one of many free online tools.
Guidance: The term “air mile” is internationally defined as a “nautical mile” which is equivalent to 6,076 feet or 1,852 meters. Thus, the 100 air miles are equivalent to 115.08 statute miles or 185.2 kilometers.
The 100 air-mile exemption, which is in the regulations at §395.1(e)(1), allows a commercial driver to use a time record in place of a log, provided that certain conditions are met. While this is possibly the most widely used hours-of-service exemption, it may be the most commonly misused exemption, as well.

Have at least 10 consecutive hours off before starting their next on-duty period. The 150 air mile exemption is for non-CDL drivers who: Operate within 150 air miles.
