The measurement of an area calculates and displays the area between three or more points on the map. To start measuring an area: Press the ‘Measure distance’ button (button turns blue)
Select the Measure a distance tool on the measure toolbar. Click on the map on one side of the passage, drag your cursor to the other side and double-click to finish the measurement. A line will stretch between the points that you clicked on the map.
The scale of the map permits the user to convert distance on the map to distance on the ground or vice versa. The ability to determine distance on a map, as well as on the earth’s surface, is an important factor in planning and executing military missions.
Measure Distance on a Military Map. A graphic scale is a ruler printed on the map and is used to convert distances on the map to actual ground distances. The graphic scale is divided into two parts. To the right of the zero, the scale is marked in full units of measure and is called the primary scale.

Soldiers must know how to determine locations of points on a map, measure distances and azimuths, and identify symbols on a map. They must also be able to determine the elevation and relief of areas on standard military maps.
Performance Steps. 1. Identify the scale of the map. The map scale is the ratio (1:50,000) of the distance on map (1 inch) relative to the distance on the ground (usually 50,000 inches). 2.
