The New York State vehicle safety inspection program helps make sure every vehicle registered in this state meets the minimum standards for safe operation on public streets and highways. In addition, most vehicles are subject to an emissions inspection to help reduce air pollution.
New York State (NYVIP3) inspections include a check of on-board diagnostic system (OBDII) on non-exempt vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) less than 8,501 pounds and that are gas-powered or diesel-powered vehicles with a model year less than or equal to the current year minus two and greater than the current year minus 25.
Article 5 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law provides for a system of inspection for all vehicles registered in New York State. Inspections are required at least once every 12 months and are performed by official inspection stations that are privately owned but licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Any diesel-powered vehicle registered anywhere in New York State, with a maximum gross weight (MGW), as indicated on the vehicle registration certificate, greater than 8,500 pounds, can be required to pass a random roadside diesel emissions inspection.
