The official flag of Nunavut was proclaimed on 1 April 1999, along with the territory of Nunavut in Canada. It features a red inuksuk —a traditional Inuit land marker—and a blue star, which represents the Niqirtsuituq, the North Star, and the leadership of elders in the community.

Objective. Students will locate and label Nunavut on a map of Canada/North America and will learn and research key facts. After learning and discussing the symbolism of both the flag and the coat of arms, students will work in pairs and create either a new flag or a new coat of arms for their school or community.
