4 wrz 2023 · In every patient with a thyroid nodule, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) measurement should be the initial test and be used as a guide for further management. A normal or high TSH commonly raises concerns as the risk of malignancy increases in parallel with the level of serum TSH.
With respect to TSH values, a scintigraphy scan (123-I or technetium 99mTc pertechnetate) should be performed in patients with thyroid nodules and serologic evidence of low or low-normal TSH concentration for further evaluation of nodule functionality.
10 sty 2023 · Thyroid nodules are often diagnosed as benign by needle biopsy during a patient evaluation. Although these nodules are benign, almost all of them will enlarge or grow over time. Thus, thyroid nodule size is one reason for benign thyroid nodule surgery. Any nodule that is 4 cm or larger should be removed with thyroid surgery.

These are a common finding in the general population, majority being diagnosed incidentally during neck imaging. The major clinical relevance lies in the fact that 4–6.5% of nodules can be malignant.

Thyroid nodules are detected incidentally during clinical examination or, more often, during imaging studies performed for another reason. All detected thyroid nodules should be evaluated clinically.
