Measure Distance on a Military Map. A graphic scale is a ruler printed on the map and is used to convert distances on the map to actual ground distances. The graphic scale is divided into two parts. To the right of the zero, the scale is marked in full units of measure and is called the primary scale.
Performance Steps. 1. Identify the scale of the map. The map scale is the ratio (1:50,000) of the distance on map (1 inch) relative to the distance on the ground (usually 50,000 inches). 2. Find the two points/ places on the map that you are going to measure the distance. Use any of the item stated above (preferably a strip of paper for straight line distances) to measure the distance between the two places.
Soldiers must know how to determine locations of points on a map, measure distances and azimuths, and identify symbols on a map. They must also be able to determine the elevation and relief of areas on standard military maps.
