I agree with everyone who is asking you to book directly with the airlines. As to when to book, book as early as possible. If you can travel early in May then you might get cheaper fares, as schools start closing around this month in the US and prices start increasing.
Don't know about exp of air india direct flights from other US cities. For the flight I took, I paid extra $150 for leg room seats. there were personal screens for each seat. my TV was not working. The flight was full so no option to change seats.
