What is economy class syndrome? The creation of blood clots in veins within the legs. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) sets in provoking the risk of compromised blood circulation in the affected limb and precipitating the hazard of a clot breakout.
The term economy class syndrome’ was first used in an article in 1988 by Cruick-shank (Cruickshank, Gorlin & Jennet, 1988) to describe three cases of thrombosis after long-haul air flights. This term may not be strictly accurate as the risk of thrombosis may also be increased when taking any long journey.
