Indeed, aspirin withdrawal has been associated with an increased risk of thrombosis both in clinical and fundamental research studies. Such complications occur within the first month after interrupting aspirin therapy and their mechanism remains unexplained.
The term economy class syndrome’ was first used in an article in 1988 by Cruick-shank (Cruickshank, Gorlin & Jennet, 1988) to describe three cases of thrombosis after long-haul air flights. This term may not be strictly accurate as the risk of thrombosis may also be increased when taking any long journey.
