The term economy class syndrome’ was first used in an article in 1988 by Cruick-shank (Cruickshank, Gorlin & Jennet, 1988) to describe three cases of thrombosis after long-haul air flights. This term may not be strictly accurate as the risk of thrombosis may also be increased when taking any long journey.
ADVERSE EFFECTS. The commonest side effect, even with low doses of aspirin is peptic ulcer disease. Other toxicities include angioedema, urticaria, asthma exacerbation, and rhinitis. Rarer adverse effects are prolongation of prothrombin time, thrombocytopenia, tinnitus, and interstitial nephritis.
