This contains spoilers for District 9. On its surface, District 9 is a story about racial oppression. The concept is based on the story of the real District 6 . But I think it is worth taking a closer look at the Prawns and their reasons for coming to Earth. Let's begin with a few facts:

Prawns, unlike humans, eat almost all of their food raw. They appear to be primarily carnivorous, as per the large amount of meat dealers in District 9. They also have a very strong liking of cat food, which has an effect on the aliens that is similar to the effect of catnip on cats.
