In order to read a chart, you interpret longitude and latitude lines to determine your coordinates, which is your position. You have to understand and interpret different symbols like depth, scale, and navigation marks. Using these symbols, you find a safe course and plot it on the chart.

The more historical method uses a system of degrees, minutes (1 degree = 60 minutes), and seconds (1 minute = 60 seconds). By default, most modern GPS systems express latitudes and longitudes using decimal notation.
One degree of latitude equals approximately 364,000 feet (69 miles), one minute equals 6,068 feet (1.15 miles), and one-second equals 101 feet. One-degree of longitude equals 288,200 feet (54.6 miles), one minute equals 4,800 feet (0.91 mile), and one second equals 80 feet.
Degrees, minutes and seconds are denoted by the symbols °, ', ". e.g. 10° 33' 19" means an angle of 10 degrees, 33 minutes and 19 seconds . A degree is divided into 60 minutes (of arc), and each minute is divided into 60 seconds (of arc).
One way to write spherical coordinates (latitudes and longitudes) is using degrees-minutes-seconds (DMS). Minutes and seconds range from 0 to 60. For example, the geographic coordinate expressed in degrees-minutes-seconds for New York City is: LATITUDE: 40 degrees, 42 minutes, 51 seconds N LONGITUDE: 74 degrees, 0 minutes, 21 seconds W
One nautical mile = about 1.15 miles; On your chart look for the scale bar which indicates the distance on the chart corresponding to a given distance on the ground. For example, if the scale is 1:50,000, then one inch on the chart represents 50,000 inches on the ground.
