DIRECTION. Next in our study of spatial thinking is direction and distance. Direction is the location of something relative to something else. If we refer back to our example with Google Maps, an online program will determine a direction based on your current location and your intended destination.

Local refers to immediate surroundings, such as neighborhood, city, county, and state. National refers to a country. Regional refers to a collection of other units, such as
transportation and communication. For example, as people and ideas could travel farther distances over shorter time periods, cities began to cover larger land areas and be spaced farther apart. Architectural improvements, such as high-rise buildings and skyscrapers, have also inuenced the location and land-use of urban areas.
