8 lip 2024 · Denis Diderot (born October 5, 1713, Langres, France—died July 31, 1784, Paris) was a French man of letters and philosopher who, from 1745 to 1772, served as chief editor of the Encyclopédie, one of the principal works of the Age of Enlightenment.
It was at this period that Rousseau visited Diderot in prison and came out a changed man, with newfound ideas about the disadvantages of knowledge, civilization, and Enlightenment – the so-called illumination de Vincennes.
Denis Diderot's Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire Raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et dés Métiers (or Encyclopédie) was a key work of the Enlightenment, an intellectual period noted for the questioning of traditional authority through the use of logic and the emphasis upon empirical as opposed the revealed knowledge.
