I booked basic economy for 2 adults and 2 kids. Just contacted Delta through the chat/messaging function on the app and asked them if we could be seated together (at least 2 and 2 so each kid is with a parent). They selected seats for us-- all 4 together-- for all 3 flights. Took only a few minutes.

The trip was planned on relatively short notice, and unexpected. I booked the Basic Economy seats for the three of us.
