Cap-Haïtien is near the historic Haitian town of Milot, which lies 19 kilometres (12 mi) to the southwest along a gravel road. Milot was Haiti's first capital under the self-proclaimed King Henri Christophe, who ascended to power in 1807, three years after Haiti had gained independence from France. He renamed Cap‑Français as Cap‑Henri.

Cap-Haïtien (Haitian Creole: Kap Ayisyen) is an arrondissement in the Nord department of Haiti and is the second-most important city of the country. It is known as the historical and tourism capital of the country. Cap-Haïtien was founded in 1670 by the French settler Bertrand d'Ogeron de La Bouëre.
