Altitude: The altitudinal range of the national park is 2400m to 4507m. Volcanoes National Park is situated along the border with neighboring the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The international border line stretches across the whole Virunga Range, joining the summits five of the six volcanoes.
Spanning on a 160 sqkm area in the northern part of Rwanda, Volcanoes national park is part of the great Virunga volcano conservation region spanning to cover Virunga National Park Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.
Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range – home of the endangered mountain gorilla and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath.

Volcanoes National Park is located in the northwestern part of Rwanda. The national park shares borders with Mgaahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The national park only encompasses an area of 62 square miles (160 sq km).
These exist in the various altitudinal ranges where tropical rainforest ranges at an altitude of 2500-3200m; bamboo forest occupies more than 30% of Volcanoes National Park land area. At 2600-3600m, the south and western part of Volcanoes NP can be humid, and dominated by hypericum forest.
