This is also sometimes called “hub travel” and is the best way to see the country on (somewhat) your own terms without renting a car.
One has a "rule of thumb" when calculating distances using AA Route Planner: Get mileage (not kilometers) & divide by 35 = time on the road. Stopping for lunch or photos is not included in the time.
