Hofstede’s Power distance Index measures the extent to which the less powerful members of organizations and institutions (like the family) accept and expect that power is distributed unequally. This represents inequality (more versus less), but defined from below, not from above.
What Hofstede introduced was the Power Distance Index (PDI), a quantitative way to gauge and compare power distance among different cultures. With this index, he was able to rank countries based on the acceptance of power imbalances among their people.
This initial analysis identified systematic differences in national cultures on four primary dimensions: power distance (PDI), individualism (IDV), uncertainty avoidance (UAI) and masculinity (MAS), which are described below.
