I’m a sucker for severe electric-laden art-deco theaters like the Trans-Lux Modern Theater which was once located in Midtown Manhattan on the corner of 58th Street and Madison Avenue.
Background. Trans-Lux was a company that specialized in rear-projection systems for stock exchanges and movie theaters. With the theater business in trouble at the end of the 1950s, Trans-Lux diversified into television production and distribution; they commissioned the 1960s version of Felix the Cat, as well as The Mighty Hercules.
Comments. View larger map →. This was the third Trans-Lux newsreel theatre in New York City, but was built to replace the first, which opened in 1931 in converted retail space on the northeast corner of Madison Avenue and 58th Street.
By 1969, the company had brought large, modern theaters to five more suburban shopping centers, nearly doubling the size of its theater holdings. The next year, Eugene Picker joined Trans-Lux to head up its entertainment division and added 16 theaters to the chain, bringing the total to 37 theaters in ten states.
