The languages in the region mostly comprise Indo-Iranic and Dravidian languages, and further members of other language families like Austroasiatic, and Tibeto-Burman languages. English is considered the international lingua franca of the South Asian countries.
South Asia has one of the most complex and diverse range of languages and dialects in the entire world. There are literally thousands of languages and dialects throughout the region, spoke by millions of people or only by a few hundred people.
The major families in terms of numbers are Indo-European, specifically Indo-Aryan languages and Dravidian languages in South Asia; and Sino-Tibetan in East Asia. Several other families are regionally dominant.
