Created in 1999 out of the eastern portion of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut encompasses the traditional lands of the Inuit, the indigenous peoples of Arctic Canada. Its capital is Iqaluit.
27 mar 2023 · With a total area of 2,038,722 sq. km, Nunavut is the largest and the northernmost Canadian territory. Located at the mouth of the Frobisher Bay, on the southeastern part of the Baffin Island is Iqaluit – the territorial capital, the largest community, and the only city of Nunavut.
Nunavut has long land borders with the Northwest Territories on the mainland and a few Arctic islands, and with Manitoba to the south of the Nunavut mainland; it also meets Saskatchewan to the southwest at a quadripoint, and has a short land border with Newfoundland and Labrador on Killiniq Island.
Nunavut obejmuje nizinny, tundrowy obszar kontynentalny wzdłuż północno-zachodnich wybrzeży Zatoki Hudsona oraz wybrzeża Morza Arktycznego do południka 122°W. Obszar terytorium zajmuje także szereg wysp arktycznych (do największych należą: Wyspa Wiktorii, Ziemia Baffina, Wyspa Devon, Wyspa Księcia Walii, Wyspa Melville’a ).
