Yorkshire is a historic county of England, centred on the county town of York. The region was first occupied after the retreat of the ice age around 8000 BC. During the first millennium AD it was inhabited by celtic Britons and occupied by Romans, Angles and Vikings.
History. North Yorkshire non-metropolitan and ceremonial county was formed on 1 April 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972. It covered most of the North Riding of Yorkshire, as well as northern parts of the West Riding of Yorkshire, northern and eastern East Riding of Yorkshire and the former county borough of York.

Thankfully, history saw many buildings survive the Baedeker Blitz campaign of World War Two. Today, York remains one of the most historic cities in Britain and a popular destination for tourists. York's history is said to have begun with the arrival of the Romans in 71 AD.
