25 sty 2024 · A flight level (FL) is a standard pressure altitude, expressed as three numbers. Aircraft flying on flight levels all measure their altitude from the same pressure setting, 1013.2 Hpa (or 29.92 InHg). This is based on the principle of something called the International Standard Atmosphere.
4 lis 2023 · Flight levels use standardized pressure to express altitudes above 18,000 feet. Only a handful of specialized aircraft can reach FL600 and above. Commercial airliners generally fly between FL250 and FL410. The transition between feet and flight levels occurs at 18,000 feet in the USA.

Flight levels are described by a number, which is the nominal altitude, or pressure altitude, in hundreds of feet, while being a multiple of 500 ft, therefore always ending in 0 or 5. Therefore, a pressure altitude of 32,000 ft (9,800 m) is referred to as "flight level 320".
10 mar 2024 · Usually, FLs above 360 are reserved for long-haul flights or intercontinental flights(international). A320, Twin engine narrow body short-haul flight and not the very least wide-body jet engine aircrafts like A380, A350, B747, B777 etc., can fly at even higher altitudes like FL300 to FL460.
Strictly speaking a flight level is an indication of pressure, not of altitude. Only above the transition level (which depends on the local QNH but is typically 4000 feet above sea level) are flight levels used to indicate altitude; below the transition level feet are used.
