Costa Rica. The output of educational institutions and the impact of learning. Educational attainment has been increasing throughout the OECD, in particular at tertiary level. Between 2000 and 2021, the share of 25-34 year-olds with tertiary attainment increased on average by 21 percentage points.
12 wrz 2023 · This country note provides an overview of the key characteristics of the education system in Costa Rica. It draws on data from Education at a Glance 2023. In line with the thematic focus of this year’s Education at a Glance, it emphasises vocational education and training (VET), while also covering other parts of the education system.
The large majority of 15-19 year-olds across the OECD are enrolled in education. In Costa Rica, 28% of this age group are enrolled in general upper secondary education and 14% in vocational upper secondary education. A further 16% are enrolled in lower secondary programmes and 5% in tertiary programmes.
In 2016, Costa Rica spent 4.9% of its total government expenditure on tertiary education, compared to an OECD average of 2.9%. This was higher than other Latin American countries such as Argentina (2.7%), Brazil (3.5%), Colombia (2.4%) and Mexico (4%).
