It is the most common species found on hog and poultry farms, horse stables and ranches. Not only are house flies a nuisance, but they also carry disease-causing organisms.
House fly is small insect that can reach ¼ of inch in length. House fly is grey in color. It has four dark stripes on the back side of the body. Unlike other insects, house fly has only one pair of membranous wings. Second pair of wings is reduced and looks like a pair of miniature drumsticks.
Flies range in size from just 0.05 inch (1 millimeter) to 3 inches (8 centimeters) long. The common housefly is about 0.25 inch (0.64 centimeter) long. It has three pairs of legs and five eyes. Two of the eyes cover most of the head. Flies eat a variety of things. Most get food from flowers.
