AVG is a legit antivirus, likely got installed with another program you've installed recently. It often gets bundled with freeware. You should be able to uninstall it from the control panel.
From my personal experience, AVG Antivirus Free has been effective in detecting and blocking malware on my PC. However, I also use other security measures such as a firewall and frequent updates to my operating system and other software to help protect my computer from online threats.
