Renly was described in the books as a young Robert (big, powerful, etc) but they took the subtle gay hints and turn him into a complete coward who didn’t fit the description. Definitely 100% worth it. Books are quite a bit better than the show (even excluding seasons 7 and 8).
The first three books are exceptional, especially the third. It shows how different people play the game of thrones. Being honorable and righteous will not make you win in this kind of game. What I liked about it is the point-of-view of each characters.
