12 cze 2023 · Mature Size and Growth Rate. The American Sweetgum tree can reach a mature height of 60 to 80 feet (18 to 24 meters) with a spread of 40 to 60 feet (12 to 18 meters). It typically grows at a moderate to fast rate, with an average annual growth of 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 centimeters).
INTRODUCTION. Sweetgum grows in a narrow pyramid to a height of 75 feet and may spread to 50 feet (Fig. 1). The beautifully glossy, star-shaped leaves turn bright red, purple, yellow or orange in the fall (USDA hardiness zones 6 and 7) and early winter (USDA hardiness zones 8 and 9).
American sweetgum grows in full sun to partial shade in neutral to acidic soil that is moist yet well-drained. It is resistant to fire, heat, drought, soil compaction, deer and rabbits. It may grow 60 to 100 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 4 feet or more.

Looking at pictures of sweetgum leaves, you’ll see that each leaf consists of three to seven pointed blades. In summer, sweetgum leaves are green before turning bright hues of red, yellow, orange, and purple in the fall.

Historical prospective. The North American species sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) is one of only four species in the Liquidambar genus, also including species formosana, orientalis, and acalysina.
