Starting at level 2, you can kite effectively by strafe-running. The area in Butcherblock Mountains near Kaladim is ideal for this because it has an enormous density of level 1 monsters with the occasional 2-5 monster.

Bards can swarm kite up to 20 (or was it 25?) mobs at a time but it takes practice and a good zone. There's a bard leveling guide on P99 for swarm kiting to 60. I do the swarm kiting if I don't have time for a group or can't find one but personally, I like grouping up to meet new people.
