There rating system has thus far proved pretty accurate for me. The best sellers are usually rated high (Twilight, Hunger games, etc) and the young adult section is kinda tricky to navigate because the teeny boppers get on there and rate everything 5stars!

For movies and TV series, user reviews on IMDB are usually dissed in favor of opinion of professional critics (Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes), but it seems that for books Good Reads (equivalent of user reviews on IMDB) is dominating the rating space.
For example, Pulp Fiction is rated at 93%, placing it below movies such as Finding Nemo and Boyhood. That's the nature of sites like RT that aggregate reviews by various people with their own viewpoints. Goodreads is not a bad system for rating books. People enjoy different books, simple as that.
