Addition moves to the right, but the negative sign in front of the 4 changes our direction, so we move to the left instead. Move four spaces left of -6 and you'll land on -10, so -6 + (-4) = -10. Don't get confused by where you start on the number line.

A negative times a negative equals a positive. What if it was negative 2 times positive 2? Well in this case, let's first of all look at the two numbers without signs. We know that 2 times 2 is 4. But here we have a negative times a positive 2, and it turns out that when you multiply a negative times a positive you get a negative.
Adding two negative numbers is easy: you're just adding two "minus" arrows (that is, two arrows pointing to the left along the number line), so it's just like regular addition with positive numbers, but in the opposite direction. For instance, 4 +4 64 =4 10, and −44 −4 6 =4 −44 +4 (−6) =4 −10.
