The Stits SA-3A Playboy (also called the Stitts SA-3A Playboy) is a single seat, strut-braced low-wing monoplane that was designed by Ray Stits for amateur construction. The aircraft was designed and the prototype was completed in a three-month period during 1952.
Designed as a high-performance, single-seat, aerobatic sportsplane for the amateur constructor, the Playboy could be fitted with any engine between 48 kw (65 hp) and 67 kw (90 hp). The wing was of wood, the fuselage being constructed from chrome-molybdenum tubing, and the structure was fabric covered.
Ultimately a stretch of the Merlin III was designed, sized to seat 22 passengers and called the SA226-TC Metro. Because FAA regulations limited an airliner to no more than 19 seats if no flight attendant was to be carried, the aircraft was optimized for that number of passengers.
The aircraft can seat four crew members (three officers and one enlisted) with pilot and copilot/tactical coordinator (COTAC) in the front of the cockpit and the tactical coordinator (TACCO) and sensor operator (SENSO) in the back.
