17 cze 2006 · The 2-6-6-4’s four-wheel trailing truck was needed to support a large, deep firebox that was placed behind the rear driving wheels. This big firebox was critical to producing the high combustion rates required for a modern high-horsepower steam locomotive.
The Union Pacific Challengers are a type of simple articulated 4-6-6-4 steam locomotive built by American Locomotive Company (ALCO) from 1936 to 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad until the late 1950s. A total of 105 Challengers were built in five classes. They were nearly 122 ft (37 m) long and weighed 537 short tons (487 tonnes).

The Lionel Corporation used the 2-6-4 wheel arrangement in many of its model steam locomotives, including the 2037 used in the infamous pastel-coloured Girls' Train. Their 2-6-4 model was based on the Pennsylvania Railroad’s K4 class pacific , even though this was a 4-6-2 rather than a 2-6-4.
13 cze 2006 · The Northern Pacific went on to order 35 more 4-6-6-4s in three different classes-the last steam engines bought by the railroad. Subsidiary Spokane, Portland & Seattle also received eight oil-burning versions of the NP Challengers. Alco promoted its 4-6-6-4 to other railroads.
